Blue-winged x Cinnamon Teal (Spatula discors x S. cyanoptera), Rio Rico Golf Club, Santa Cruz County

This Blue-winged x Cinnamon Teal was found and photographed by Sean Fitzgerald on 28 April 2018

A fairly common hybrid combination and this is the 3rd ebird report for Santa Cruz County.

Intermediate between Blue-winged and Cinnamon teals, with the red eye, cinnamon flanks and breast, and fairly large spatulate bill of a Cinnamon Teal, and the spotted flanks, bluish head, and white facial crescent of a Blue-winged Teal. The latter feature is quite variable in this hybrid combination; this individual is fairly strongly-marked.
