Buff-collared Nightjar (Antrostomus ridgwayi), California Gulch/Warsaw Canyon Confluence, Santa Cruz County

These Buff-collared Nightjars were photographed by Laurens Halsey on 28 April and by Parker O'Neil on 26 May 2018

Fourth year in a row for this location and they were first found this year by Simon Kiacz on 17 April and up to 4 have been reported from this location this year.

This species is a rare and irregular visitor to desert canyons close to the border, especially in areas with thornscrub, where it may be more regular than records suggest; however it does appear to be irregular in numbers from year to year and is currently on the review list.

Medium sized nightjar (note long rictal bristles) with complete, clean, bold buffy collar.
