Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus), Upper Pinal Campground, Gila County

This Short-tailed Hawk was found by Jeff Ritz, Dara Vazquez, and Laurie Nessel and photographed by Jeff Ritz on 13 August 2018. One of two found that day.

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and increasing in Arizona for the last several years and it has bred. Due to this increasing trend and over 50 accepted records, the Arizona Bird Committee removed this species from the review list in 2018.

Mostly unmarked underparts including chin & throat and underwing linings. Dark brown crown & auriculars with white throat giving helmeted appearance. Whitish base to black tipped primaries.
