Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens), Coon Bluff, Maricopa County

This Reddish Egret was found by Usha Tatini 6 October 2018 and photographed by Gordon Karre on 11 October 2018

Likely same individual reported by Jack Holloway on 1 October 2018 at Phon D Sutton campsite on the Salt River as the locations are only a few miles apart.

Casual summer/fall visitor in Arizona. Nearly all records pertain to juveniles and are likely from nesting areas along the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) in Mexico. This has been a good year for the species in Arizona with at least 8 documented.

With a Snowy and a Great Egret. A medium-sized heron, larger than Snowy Egret with it but much smaller than Great Egret also with it. Juveniles have an overall odd, creamy dark gray coloration with patchy pale rusty tones to head, neck, breast and wings; dark legs and dark, long straight bill; contrasting pale eyes.
