Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius), Mammoth sewage ponds, Pinal County

This Red Phalarope was found and photographed by Doug Jenness on 03 October 2018

Red Phalaropes are casual transients in Arizona. Although they have occurred in nearly every month of the year, they are mostly found in the late fall and early winter. Fifth record for Pinal Co.

Stout bill with a pale base and plain gray back are helpful to identification. Note the retained juvenile tertials.
