Tufted Flycatcher (Mitrephanes phaeocercus), Upper Ramsey Canyon, Cochise County

This Tufted Flycatcher was photographed by Rob Woodward on 11 May 2018

There are eight accepted records (plus two pending ABC vote) of Tufted Flycatcher in Arizona. Most records are now from the Huachuca Mountains, and the presence of multiple birds at different canyons makes it difficult to tease apart the number of individuals involved. A pair has returned to this location annually since 2015, although no documentation has been received from 2017 so the presence of birds that year does not count toward the total. In 2016, the pair successfully fledged two offspring. In 2018, there have been reports of two birds once again but only one submitted to the ABC. (The ABC treats returning birds as a new record that is reviewed whenever the birds return.)

Unmistakable small flycatcher with cinnamon underparts and a conspicuous crest. The second photo shows the bird sitting on its nest.
