Flammulated Owl (Psiloscops flammeolus), Patagonia Lake State Park, Santa Cruz County

This Flammulated Owl was found by a state park employee and photographed by Alan Schmierer and Stuart Healy on 06 December 2018

Flammulated Owls breed in ponderosa pine forests through much of Arizona, and winter in Mexico and central America. There are very few records of this species in winter in the United States, and this may be the second documented winter record from Arizona. This species is also very rare in the Arizona lowlands; this may be the first record from the Sonoita Creek area.

Small owl with dark eyes, reddish facial disk.
