Clay-colored Thrush (Turdus grayi), Arivaca Cienega, Cochise CountyThis Clay-colored Thrush was
found by Maureen Blackford, Sally Johnsen, and Diane
Rand on 15 May 2020 and photographed by Maureen
Blackford and Gary Rosenberg on 15 May 2020 and by
Ryan O'Donnell on 20 May 2020 First Arizona Record if accepted by the ABC. Native to northeastern Mexico south to Colombia. A previous record was not accepted by the ABC due to questionable origin as it would have been one of the only single-day mid-summer records for the United States, and the bird could not be evaluated for cage wear from the photo. This species has increased in recent years in the United States, with records from Big Bend National Park in Texas and New Mexico. Drab brown thrush with paler, warmer underparts and pale greenish-yellow bill help to rule out other similar and equally rare Turdus thrushes and indicates the northeastern Mexico subspecies is involved. 15 May 2020, photo by Maureen Blackford
