Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Apache Lake, Gila CountyThis Red-necked Grebe was
found by by Ryan O'Donnell, Troy Corman, and Sharon
Lashway on 16 January 2020 and photographed by Ryan
O'Donnell on the same date. Observed on both the Gila County and Maricopa County sides of the lake. Casual (though increasing) migrant and winter visitor, primarily to the LCRV and lakes around Phoenix. Only one prior record for Gila County. A medium sized grebe, smaller than a Western and
larger than a Horned, with large mostly yellow bill, and
a blocky triangular-shaped head. The cheeks are white
and the black cap extends just below the eyes. The neck
