Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Saguaro Lake, Maricopa County

This Red-necked Grebe was found by by Ryan O'Donnell, Troy Corman, and Sharon Lashway on 22 January 2020 and photographed by Ryan O'Donnell on the same date.

Casual (though increasing) migrant and winter visitor, primarily to the LCRV and lakes around Phoenix. Possibly a returning bird.

A medium sized grebe, smaller than a Western and larger than a Horned, with large mostly yellow bill, and a blocky triangular-shaped head. The cheeks are white and the dark cap extends just below the eyes. The neck is reddish anteriorly and dark brown posteriorly.
