Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), White Star Dairy, Stanfield, Pinal CountyThis Ruff was photographed by Gary Rosenberg on 20 September 2020 Female-plumaged Ruff discovered earlier in the day by Kent Miller. There have been about 11 previous records for Arizona, and two previous records for Pinal County. Note the large size in comparison to a "peep", and the buff-edged scapulars and wing coverts and tertials. The legs are relatively long, and a dull or dirty yellow - some individuals have brighter yellow legs; the bill is medium-lengthed (longer than a Pectoral Sandpiper, but shorter than a Stilt Sandpiper or Dowitcher). 20 September 2020, photo by Gary Rosenberg 20 September 2020, photo by Patricia Isaacson 04 October 2020, photo by Pierre Deviche All photos are copyrighted© by photographer |
