Yellow-green Vireo (Vireo flavoviridis), Hassayampa River, Maricopa County

This Yellow-green Vireo was photographed by Caleb Strand on 15 September 2020.

This bird was found by Tommy Debardeleben and Caleb Strand just south of the Kerkes Trailhead along the Hassayampa River.

This will represent about a 15th Arizona record; virtually all of the previous accepted records have been from late May through mid-August, the exception being one found on 17 September 2017 at Las Cienegas. This pattern is simalar to that found in South Texas, in contrast with birds that show up along the coast in California, which tend to be in September and October.

Yellow-green Vireo is very similar to fall Red-eyed Vireo in plumage, but have more yellow along the sides of the body, in the undertail region, and along the sides of the face. Also note the larger bill than Red-eyed Vireo, and the more muted eyebrow pattern, lacking much black along the edge of the gray brow.
