Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator), Queen Valley Golf Course Pond, Pinal CountyThis Trumpeter Swan was photographed by Mark Ochs on 01 January 2021, and subsecuently by Pierre Deviche on 16 January, by Doug Jenness on 21 January, and by Gordon Karre on 22 January. Apparently first record of species for Pinal County. Features that are consistent with Trumpeter Swan include: Long dark bill with rather straight upper edge; no yellow lore patch (but some adult Tundra Swans lack these); black facial skin includes the eyes such that these do not stand out; border of white on forehead forms a V and is not rounded (but this can be the case in some Tundra Swans); bird swims rather low on water, has rounded back (back is less rounded in Tundra S., but this is a subtle difference). Bird did not vocalize. 01 January 0212, photo by Mark Ochs 16 January 2021, photo by Pierre Deviche 21 January 2021, photo by Doug Jenness 22 January 2021, photo by Gordon Karre All photos are copyrighted© by photographer |
