Brant (Branta bernicla), Rio Salado Wetlands, Phoenix, Maricopa County

This Brant was discovered on 16 May 2021 by Tina Bickel and Robert McCormick and photographed by Pierre Deviche on 18 May and Chris Rohrer on 19 May.

Brant is usually strictly coastal and confined to salt water. It is very rare in Arizona with less than 20 accepted records.

The white neck markings are diagnostic. The amount of white on the neck as well as the low contrast between chest and foreflank indicate this is the expected "Black" Brant, as are all Arizona records of this distinctive small goose. Even though this bird was very tame and approachable, it shows no sign of previous captivity. It was not banded, had both halluces, and seemed to be in good physical condition.
