Tufted Flycatcher (Mitrephanes phaeocercus), Box Canyon, Pima County

This Tufted Flycatcher was photographed by Christine Jacobs on 18 May 2021

There are about ten records of Tufted Flycatcher in Arizona, with one previous from Pima County. Most records are from the Chiricahuas and Huachucas, where they have bred, though the first record was from the far northwest part of the state.

A small flycatcher with cinnamon underparts and a conspicuous crest, it bears a superficial resemblance to a Buff-breasted Flycatcher.
