Eurasian Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca crecca), Gilbert Water Ranch, Maricopa County

This male "Eurasian" Green-winged Teal was found by Pierre Deviche at the Gilbert Water Ranch on 2 March 2008.  It was photographed the same day by Pierre and by Michael Moore.  It is the second sighting of this form in Arizona (the first was a sight record in 1953) and the first to be photographed in the state.

Eurasian Green-winged Teal is an ABC review species.. The ABC requests that reports of these species be accompanied by full details, including when possible, a photo, tape recording, video, or field sketch.  Please send documentation to the Arizona Bird Committee via the online form or click here for further instructions and information about ABC.  Submission of documentation to AZFO does not constitute submission to the ABC.

Note the horizontal white line on the body, white lines surrounding the green on the face and the courser gray vermiculations on the sides.  See comparison photo of American Green-winged Teal below.

Here is an American Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca carolinensis) for comparison, also taken at the Gilbert Water Ranch.  Note the vertical white stripe on the side, reduced or absent white lines around the green patch on the side of the head and the very fine gray vermiculations on the sides.
