Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri), Gilbert Water Ranch, Maricopa County

This Fischer's Lovebird was discovered by Richard Catero and photographed by Brendon Grice on 24 September 2008 in the cactus garden by the main parking lot at the Gilbert Water Ranch.  Rosy-faced (Peach-faced) Lovebirds are regular in the Water Ranch so this is the second species of lovebird recorded there.  Although Rosy-faced Lovebirds are feral in Phoenix, Fischer's is not known to breed in the wild here.  Judging by the poor condition of the bill and plumage, this bird appears to be recently escaped from captivity.

Fischer's Lovebird is native to Tanzania and its wild population has declined severely in recent times due to capture for the pet trade.  It was first bred in the US in 1926 and is a common pet.
