Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera), Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz County

A Golden-winged Warbler was seen briefly in upper Madera Canyon by John Yerger and Jake Mohlman on 2 December 2007. On 16 December 2007 this bird was located in lower Madera Canyon between Madera Canyon Picnic Area and Proctor Road by Jym Mooney, where it was reported  at least through 23 December 2007.  Dick Dionne took this photograph of it on 22 December 2007.  Golden-winged Warbler has declined throughout its range, apparently due to general habitat loss and to losing out in competition with Blue-winged Warbler.  Golden-winged Warbler was a regular vagrant to the state  during the 1990's, but perhaps due to its general decline, it has been much less frequent since then.

Golden-winged Warbler is an ABC review species..  The ABC requests that reports of these species be accompanied by full details, including when possible, a photo, tape recording, video, or field sketch.  Please send documentation to the Arizona Bird Committee via the online form or click here for further instructions and information about ABC.  Submission of documentation to AZFO does not constitute submission to the ABC.
