Tufted Flycatcher (Mitrephanes phaeocercus), Herb Martyr Campground, Chiricahua Mountains, Cochise County

This Tufted Flycatcher was found on the morning of 5 May 2008 by Daniele Mitchell of Ottawa, Canada.  Daniele told P.D. Hulce about the discovery and showed the bird to P.D.'s tour group that afternoon.  P.D. then got the word out.  These photographs were taken by Chris Benesh on 6 May 2008, Gary Rosenberg on 7 May 2008, Oliver Niehuis on 9 May 2008 and Tony Godfrey on 15 May 2008.  Chris also recorded its call on 6 May 2008 (sound recording below).   The last  report was on 30 May 2008.

There is one previous record of Tufted Flycatcher in Arizona and two other records from Texas.

Tufted Flycatcher is a review species.  Submitting photos to AZFO does not constitute reporting a rare bird for consideration as an official record. To ensure that a record becomes official, details or photos of Sketch Details Species should be sent to the Editors of North American Birds and a full report of Review Species should be submitted to the Arizona Bird Committee. Most rare birds are under _documented and subsequent observers of a rarity are always encouraged to submit reports and additional photos, especially for birds that are challenging to identify.
